Cyber attacks are increasing at an alarming rate. In 2025 alone, small businesses suffered over 40% of all reported breaches. Here is a practical checklist to protect your business.
1. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Every admin account — email, hosting, banking, social media — should have 2FA enabled. Use authenticator apps, not SMS.
2. Use a Password Manager
Stop reusing passwords. Tools like Bitwarden or 1Password generate and store strong unique passwords for every account.
3. Keep Everything Updated
Operating systems, CMS, plugins, and dependencies should be updated regularly. Most breaches exploit known vulnerabilities that have patches available.
4. Regular Backups
Follow the 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of data, on 2 different media, with 1 off-site. Test restoration regularly.
5. Encrypt Sensitive Data
Use HTTPS for your website. Encrypt customer data at rest and in transit. Never store credit card info on your servers.
6. Employee Training
Your team is your biggest vulnerability AND your best defense. Train them on phishing, social engineering, and password hygiene.
7. Firewall & Network Security
Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) for your website. Set up network firewalls for your office. Segment sensitive systems.
8. Regular Security Audits
Conduct quarterly vulnerability scans and annual penetration tests. Do not wait for an attack to find weaknesses.
9. Incident Response Plan
What will you do if you get hacked? Have a documented plan: who to call, how to isolate, how to communicate.
10. Monitor Everything
Logs, alerts, and monitoring tools. Anomalies should trigger immediate investigation, not be ignored.
